Residential Glass FAQs
Splashbacks FAQs
What types of splashbacks do you offer?
We supply and install a wide range of splashback options, including:
Painted glass splashbacks
Printed glass splashbacks
Reflective glass splashbacks
Antique mirror splashbacks
Hydro-dipped glass splashbacks
Slumped glass splashbacks
Laminam splashbacks
Each option offers a different aesthetic, allowing you to choose the finish that best suits your kitchen design.
What is Laminam and why is it used for splashbacks?
Laminam is a large-format porcelain surface imported from Italy and considered a more premium or “boujee” alternative to traditional splashbacks.
It comes in a range of colours and textures and is supplied in large sheets approximately 1000 × 3000 mm, allowing for a seamless appearance with minimal joins.
Laminam is popular because it:
Has no grout lines
Is easy to clean
Creates a sleek modern look
Is highly durable and heat resistant
Can you colour match a splashback?
Yes. We can colour match splashbacks to Resene or Dulux paint colours — we simply need the paint colour code.
Some homeowners also choose to match their wall colour but adjust the tone slightly (such as double strength or half strength) to create a subtle point of difference while still keeping the design cohesive.
Do you measure and install splashbacks?
Yes. We provide a full measure and installation service to ensure your splashback fits perfectly.
Our team services Rotorua, the Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and surrounding regions.
Can splashbacks be made to custom sizes?
Yes. Most splashbacks are custom made to suit the exact measurements of your kitchen, ensuring a precise fit around cabinetry, benches, and appliances.
Can a splashback be cut after it has been made?
No. Once glass splashbacks are manufactured and toughened, they cannot be cut or modified.
For this reason, accurate measurement is essential before production.
Do power points affect splashback installation?
Yes. If your splashback requires cut-outs for power points, switches, or fittings, these must be measured and manufactured into the glass.
Additional cut-outs can increase the cost due to the extra manufacturing required.
Do curved range hoods affect splashback pricing?
Yes. Splashbacks installed behind curved range hoods or unusual shapes can require additional measuring and manufacturing work, which may affect pricing.
Can you remove my existing splashback?
Sometimes.
We can often remove existing glass or acrylic splashbacks. However, removal of tiled splashbacks is generally the homeowner’s responsibility, as removing tiles can damage the wall behind and may require plastering or repair work before installation.
In some cases, new splashbacks can be installed over existing surfaces, depending on the condition of the wall.
What information should I supply when requesting a quote?
Helpful information includes:
Kitchen plans or measurements
Inspiration images
Colour samples of your kitchen finishes (such as benchtops, wall colours, tapware, cabinetry, or fittings)
Photos of the installation area
These help us understand your design and provide a more accurate quote.
Do you have samples available?
Yes. Our showroom features a wide range of splashback samples, allowing you to see colours, textures, and finishes in person.
We can also bring samples to your home during site visits to help with colour selection.
Do you offer standard size splashbacks?
Yes. We can supply standard splashback panels similar to those sold at major hardware stores, including:
750 × 600 mm
750 × 900 mm
These can often be supplied at a more competitive price, and we can also offer some colour customisation at no additional charge.
Can glass splashbacks go behind gas hobs?
Yes, in most cases they can.
However, glass splashbacks installed behind gas hobs must be toughened safety glass and require a minimum clearance between the burner and the glass. The exact clearance depends on the cooktop manufacturer’s specifications.
If the clearance is not sufficient, Laminam or other non-glass options may be recommended instead.
Are splashbacks heat resistant?
Yes.
Glass splashbacks are toughened to withstand heat from normal cooking appliances, while Laminam is a porcelain product designed to handle high temperatures and kitchen environments.
It is still important to follow appliance manufacturer guidelines regarding clearances.
How long does splashback installation take?
The installation itself usually takes around 1–2 hours, depending on the size and complexity of the splashback.
However, because splashbacks are custom measured and manufactured, the process from measure to installation typically takes around 1–2 weeks.
Are glass splashbacks easy to clean?
Yes. One of the biggest advantages of glass splashbacks is their smooth, grout-free surface.
They can usually be cleaned with a standard glass cleaner and soft cloth, making them much easier to maintain than tiled splashbacks.
Will my splashback have joins?
Many splashbacks can be installed as a single panel, especially when using large sheets of glass.
In larger kitchens or complex layouts, some joins may be necessary, but we always aim to minimise these where possible.
Do splashbacks reflect light?
Yes, particularly gloss glass, mirror, and reflective splashbacks.
These finishes can help brighten the kitchen and make smaller spaces feel larger by reflecting natural and artificial light.
Can I install a splashback myself?
Some standard-sized splashbacks can be installed by homeowners.
However, custom splashbacks typically require professional measurement and installation to ensure the glass fits correctly around power points, cabinetry, and appliances.
Do splashbacks need maintenance?
Very little.
Unlike tiled splashbacks, glass and Laminam surfaces do not have grout lines, so there is minimal ongoing maintenance beyond regular cleaning.

Shower glass can only be measured and installed once tiling and grout work has been fully completed.
This allows us to take accurate measurements and ensures the shower glass fits perfectly.
How long does the process take?
From the time we measure the finished tiled area, the process typically takes around 10 days from measure to installation, depending on the design and hardware selected.
Installation itself is usually completed within a few hours.
How long before I can use my shower after installation?
After the installation is completed, clients are able to use the shower immediately.
Do frameless showers leak?
We install frameless shower glass to achieve a crystal-clear, minimal look.
Because frameless showers do not use bulky framing, small gaps are present around doors and panels. These gaps are minimal and are carefully considered during installation to help control water flow.
PVC seals can be supplied and installed if requested, however they are not part of the standard frameless installation.
Do you sell pre-made or off-the-shelf showers?
No. We specialise in custom-made shower glass only.
Custom showers allow for a much better fit and a cleaner overall finish compared with standard off-the-shelf units.
Can shower glass be made to fit unusual bathroom layouts?
Yes. Custom shower glass is ideal for renovations, angled walls, alcoves, and unique bathroom layouts where standard shower units would not fit properly.
Do you service areas outside Rotorua?
Yes. We supply and install custom shower glass throughout Rotorua, the Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and surrounding regions.
Are custom showers more expensive than standard ones?
Custom showers can vary in price depending on the size, hardware, and glass type selected, but they often provide a higher-quality finish and better fit compared to standard units.
We aim to offer competitive pricing while delivering a tailored result for your bathroom.
Do you offer glass protection coatings?
Yes. We recommend a water-repellent glass coating called EnduroShield.
This protective treatment helps to:

Balustrades & Pool Fencing FAQs
What is a glass balustrade?
A glass balustrade is a structural safety barrier made from toughened safety glass, commonly used for:
Decks
Balconies
Staircases
Wind breaks
Swimming Pools
Internal Mezzanines
Elevated walkways
It provides protection while maintaining a light, open, and contemporary appearance.
What is glass pool fencing?
Glass pool fencing is a compliant safety barrier designed to enclose pool areas while preserving visibility and openness.
It allows for clear sightlines across the pool area, improving both supervision and overall design flow.
What type of glass is used for balustrades and pool fencing?
Glass balustrades and pool fencing are typically made using 10–12mm toughened safety glass, designed to provide strength, durability, and safety in outdoor environments.
For fully frameless balustrades where a handrail is not desired, the glass specification may be upgraded. In some cases, this includes using thicker or laminated options such as 13.52mm SentryGlas®, depending on compliance requirements.
In addition to clear glass, we also offer a range of finishes including:
Tinted glass
Obscure or frosted glass
Decorative glass options
Balustrades can also be installed using a variety of hardware systems to suit the design and structure of your space, including:
Top mount or face mount channel systems
Mini post systems
Full height posts in a range of styles
Standoff disc systems
These hardware options are available in a range of anodised and powder-coated finishes, allowing the balustrade to either blend in or become a feature of the space.
Do I need a handrail on my glass balustrade?
Not always.
Many clients prefer a fully frameless balustrade without a handrail, and in many cases this can be achieved by upgrading the glass specification and thickness to meet compliance requirements.
This approach does come at a higher cost, as higher-spec glass is required to maintain structural performance.
Where a handrail is required, there are still minimal and well-integrated options available that maintain a clean architectural look.
What types of handrails do you offer?
We offer a range of handrail solutions designed to suit both compliance requirements and the overall design intent.
Options include:
Top cap handrails
Post-mounted handrails
Custom timber handrails
Powder-coated and anodised finishes in a range of colours
Handrails can be selected to either blend seamlessly into the design or act as a subtle feature element.
Is glass fencing safe?
Yes. All glass used is toughened safety glass manufactured to meet New Zealand standards, providing both strength and reliability in structural applications.
Do you offer glass protection coatings for balustrades and pool fencing?
Yes. We offer a protective coating called EnduroShield for glass balustrades and pool fencing.
This coating helps to:
Reduce water spotting and mineral build-up
Make the glass easier to clean
Maintain a clear, low-maintenance finish over time
This is particularly beneficial for outdoor environments and pool areas, where exposure to water and weather can affect the appearance of the glass.
Do you supply custom balustrades?
Yes. All balustrades and pool fencing we install are custom designed and supplied to suit the specific layout and structure of your property.
Do you service areas outside Rotorua?
Yes. We provide services throughout Rotorua, the Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and surrounding regions.

Pet Doors FAQs
Can you install a pet door into my existing glass?
Yes. Although sometimes it depends on the type of glass.
If your glass is standard annealed glass, we can cut a hole and install the pet door.
If the glass is toughened safety glass, it cannot be cut and will need to be replaced with a new panel made to suit the pet door. Toughened safety glass is more commonly found in ranchsliders, newer glazing, double glazing etc.
Why can’t you cut a hole in toughened glass?
Toughened glass is heat-treated for strength. Once this process is complete, the glass cannot be cut or modified.
If cutting is attempted, the glass will shatter completely.
This means any holes for pet doors must be cut before the toughening process, requiring a new piece of glass to be made.
How do I know if my glass is toughened?
Most toughened glass has a small etched stamp in one of the corners.
This stamp indicates the glass has been processed as safety glass.
If you’re unsure, we can assess it for you and advise the best option.
Can you install a pet door into double glazing?
YES, however the double glazed unit will need to be replaced.
Pet doors cannot be retrofitted into existing double glazed units (DGUs/IGUs).
If you want a pet door in double glazing, it must be manufactured into the unit from the start, which means replacing the entire unit.
What can pet doors be installed into?
We can install pet doors into:
Glass doors and panels
Timber doors
How do I choose the right pet door?
Choosing the right pet door depends on:
The size of your pet
Your security requirements
The location of installation
Our team can recommend the best option to ensure it is safe, practical, and suited to your home.
Where do you install pet doors?
Pet door installations are carried out in Rotorua and outer areas.
What pet door types do you offer?
We supply and install a wide range of pet door solutions to suit your animal. Whether it be a small cat through to a large dog - we cover all bases re style, size and functionality.
Retrofit Double Glazing FAQs
What is retrofit double glazing?
Retrofit double glazing replaces your existing single pane glass with a factory sealed double glazed unit, while keeping your existing window frames (aluminium or timber).
What is a double glazed unit (DGU/IGU)?
A DGU (double glazed unit) or IGU (insulated glass unit) is a sealed unit made from two panes of glass with a spacer in between. The sealed air or gas gap improves insulation and comfort.
What’s the difference between retrofit double glazing and full window replacement?
Retrofit keeps your existing frames and replaces the glass. Full replacement replaces both the frames and the glass. Retrofit is usually more cost-effective if frames are in good condition.
Do you reuse my existing frames?
That’s the point of retrofit. We keep the existing frames where they’re suitable, and replace the glass with sealed double glazed units.
Will my windows look different after retrofit?
Typically, the overall look remains similar because the frames stay. In aluminium systems, the glazing bead/profile is often changed to allow the double glazed unit to fit, but it’s colour matched to blend in.
What are the main benefits of double glazing?
Most homeowners notice:
a warmer home in winter and less overheating in summer
reduced condensation on the inside pane
less outside noise
improved overall comfort and energy efficiency
Will double glazing stop condensation completely?
It usually reduces visible condensation on the glass by keeping the inner pane warmer. Condensation can still occur in very humid homes or poorly ventilated rooms, so ventilation still matters.
Does double glazing reduce noise?
Yes, it can reduce outside noise, especially compared with single glazing. The result varies depending on glass thickness, window size, and sealing.
Can you retrofit double glazing into aluminium joinery?
In most cases, yes. The process commonly involves replacing the existing aluminium bead with a colour-matched profile to create space for the new double glazed unit.
Can you retrofit double glazing into timber joinery?
Yes, if the timber is in suitable condition. Timber is a good natural insulator and often worth keeping. Timber retrofit usually involves rebating the frame and fitting new timber beads to suit the new unit.
What if my timber frames have rot?
Minor timber issues can sometimes be repaired, but if rot is extensive or the frame is structurally unsound, a full joinery solution may be recommended. We’ll flag this during assessment before proceeding.
Do you recommend draft seals with retrofit?
Often, yes. Older timber windows can have small gaps or may not close tightly. Draft seals help reduce unwanted airflow and improve the performance gains from double glazing.
Can you retrofit sash windows?
Yes, but the best method depends on the sash type and condition. Sash systems typically involve removing and re-glazing the sash with a sealed unit, and ensuring the sash still operates correctly.
Can you retrofit sliding doors?
Yes. Sliding door systems need adapters depending on age and profile, but upgrading is generally straightforward once assessed.
Are there aluminium systems you can’t retrofit?
It’s rare, but some very old systems (often early 1970s profiles) may not be compatible. The quickest way to confirm is to send photos of the joinery and the glazing beads.
How long does retrofit double glazing take?
Timing depends on how many windows you’re upgrading and manufacturing lead times for the DGUs. Installation on site is typically efficient once units are ready. We’ll confirm expected timeframes after measuring.
Do you do the measuring?
Yes. Accurate measuring is essential for double glazed units, and we’ll confirm details on site before ordering.
What’s the difference between retrofit double glazing and aluminium insert windows?
Retrofit keeps your existing frames and changes the glass. Aluminium insert windows replace old timber windows with new aluminium joinery (with double glazing), often chosen when timber frames are tired, high maintenance, or beyond repair.
When would you recommend aluminium insert windows instead of retrofit?
Common reasons include:
timber frames are deteriorated or rotten beyond practical repair
you want lower maintenance long-term
you want to modernise the look
you prefer the convenience of aluminium joinery
Can you match the colour of aluminium joinery?
Usually yes. Aluminium profiles and powder-coated finishes can be selected to suit your home’s look. Although there can be slight colour variations due to existing UV exposure and age of the home.
